Η έκπληξη ήταν οι πολλές υποψηφιότητες του The Martian, αλλά ακόμα και τώρα ο 78 χρονος Ridley Scott έμεινε χωρίς υποψηφιότητα και όλα δείχνουν ότι δεν θα αποκτήσει ποτέ το βραβείο.
Η Cate Blanchett και η Rooney Mara που έλαμψαν στο Carol του Todd Haynes απέσπασαν από μια υποψηφιότητα όμως η ταινία δεν διεκδικεί ένα από τα βραβεία Σκηνοθεσίας ή Ταινίας.
Ο Johnny Depp έμεινα εκτός υποψηφιοτήτων για το Black Mass, το ίδιο και ο Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), ο Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina) και ο Will Smith (Concussion).
Το Straight Outta Compton που χάλασε κόσμο στην Αμερική (στην Ελλάδα ούτε που προβλήθηκε) διακρίθηκε για το σενάριό του.
Το Star Wars: The Force Awakens περιορίστηκε (όπως ήταν λογικό σε τεχνικά βραβεία) ενώ η μεγαλύτερη έκπληξη ήταν η απουσία υποψηφιότητας του Aaron Sorkin για το Steve Jobs.
Το Hateful Eight του Tarantino, έμεινε επίσης εκτός μεγάλων κατηγοριών, αλλά έχει δυο ισχυρές υποψηφιότητες με την Jennifer Jason Leigh και τον Ennio Morricone στη Μουσική.
Το Spotlight θα εκπροσωπήσει η Rachel McAdams και ο Mark Ruffalo στους B’ρόλους, ενώ ο Michael Keaton δεν τα κατάφερε φέτος.
Στην κατηγορία ξενόγλωσσης ταινίας μπήκαν τα αναμενόμενα με το Son of Saul να είναι το φαβορί, ενώ στις Animated ταινίες το Inside Out φαντάζει σίγουρος νικητής, ενώ πήρε και θέση στην πεντάδα σεναρίου, κάτι που έχει να συμβεί χρόνια για animation ταινία.
Η φετινή 88η απονομή με παρουσιαστή τον Chris Rock θα διεξαχθεί στις 28 Φεβρουαρίου.
